Alexis Matthew Pochernikoff

1886 - 1933

A. M. Podchernikoff was born in Vladimir, Russia in 1886. He was born to a family of artists, and studied painting under his grandfather Dmitri Zolotarieff, as well as Ilya Repin and Verestchagin. Podchernikoff was awarded a gold medal for his painting "My Beloved Russian Woods", which was then purchased by the Royal Art Commission in Moscow. After the Russo-Japanese war, Podchernikoff immigrated to the United States in 1905, where he originally settled in San Francisco before moving to Santa Barbara in 1913. Podchernikoff was known for his tonalist California landscapes. His work was exhibited in the California Artists Golden Gate Park Museum, and is currently represented in the Orange County Museum, the Oakland Museum of California, and the Paine Art Center in Wisconsin. Podchernikoff died in 1933.
