Alfred Jansson

1863 - 1931

Alfred Jansson was born in 1863 in Vermland, Sweden. He studied painting in Stockholm, Christiana and Paris. In 1889,at the age of 26, Jansson traveled to Chicago where he relocated permanently. He was part of a large Scandinavian community of painters who lived in Chicago and included Henry Peterson, Carl Lindin, Charles Hallberg, Arid Nyholm and Svend Svendsen. In addition to being a member of the Swedish American Artists Club, Jansson was also a member of the Palette and Chisel Club, the Chicago Arts Club, the Chicago Society of Artists and the Art League of Chicago. Jansson's paintings have been exhibited in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Swedish American Artists Club, and the Columbian Exposition. He has exhibited 85 paintings at the Art Institute of Chicago. Jansson is best remembered for his landscapes of Illinois, particularly his spring and winter scenes. He died in 1931.
