B.W. Leader

1831-1923

B.W. Leader, born Benjamin Williams on March 12, 1831, was a British landscape and coastal painter of mountains and water. He was born in Reading, and it was there that he began his painting studies in 1853. After a short time, Leader traveled to London to attend the school of the Royal Academy where he exhibited his work after studying there for only one year. He participated at the Exposition of 1889 in Paris where he earned a gold medal and a cross of the Legion of Honor for his work. In 1883 Leader became an associate of the Royal Academy and gained full membership in 1898. He also exhibited at the British Institute, Suffolk Street, and the Birmingham Society of Artists. Leader, whose paintings were known for their 'truth to nature', favored Scotland, the Midlands, and Bettwys-y-Coed, Wales as settings for his subjects. He was married to the still life painter Mary Eastlake.
