David W. Humphrey

1872 - 1950

David Humphrey was born in Wisconsin in 1872. Best known for his figure studies, genre scenes and portraits, he attended the School of the Art Institute in Chicago, then the Academie Julian in Paris. Comming of age as an artist at the height of the guilded age, he was greatly influended by the leading portrait artists of the turn of the century, especailly Sargent, Whistler, and Boldini, to whom he is frequently compared. He was a member of the Silvermine Guild & Art Colony and the Society of Independent Artists. Humphrey resided in New York most of his professional life. His paintings have been exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Academy of Design the Society of Independent Artists and the Smithsonian.
