Derk Smit

1889 - 1985

Derk Smit was born January 29, 1889 in the Netherlands. He is best remembered as a painter, decorator and lecturer. Smit studied art, first in Amsterdam, then Hanburg, and eventually Chicago at the Art Institute and the Academy of Fine Art. Smit spent much of his adult life in Chicago. He was a member of the most important art associations in Chicago including the Illinois Society of Fine Arts, the Beverly Sketch Club, the south Side Art Association and the Ridge Art Association. His work was prestigiously exhibited at Navy Pier, the Palmer House and the Auditorium Hotel. Smit also spent time painting in Brown County, Indiana. He was a member of the Hoosier Salon. Around 1953, Smit moved to Santa Barbara. He experimented with Plein-Aire landscapes. He continued to travel between California, Chicago and Brown County on painting excursions until his death in 1985 at age 96.
