Edmund Wuerpel

Edmund Wuerpel

1866 - 1958

Edmund Henry Wuerpel was a founding member of the esteemed landscape school that formed in St. Louis in the late 1890s. Wuerpel exemplified the movement's ideology of mood over Naturalism, and his mastery of Tonalism brought him great success and achievement. Wuerpel's training began in 1886 at the age of twenty when he enrolled at the School of Fine Arts in St. Louis. After two years, his talent led him to Paris, where he studied at the Julian Academy and the acclaimed Ecole des Beaux Arts. While in Paris, he met James McNeill Whistler, whose friendship and inspiration would profoundly affect Wuerpel's life and work. Wuerpel died in 1958 at the age of 92. Today his work can be found at the Art Institute of Chicago, the St. Louis Museum, the Buenos Aires Museum, the Capitol Building in Jefferson City, Wyoming and in numerous private and corporate collections throughout the United States.
