Franz Stassen

1869 - 1949

Franz Stassen was born in 1869. He was a painter, draftsman and illustrator. Together with artists August Gaul, Joself Limburg and Adolf Amberg, a generation of artists were training at the Hanauer Art Academy in Berln, Germany. Stassen's teachers in Hanauer were Frederich Karl Hausmann, Georg Cornicelius and Maz Wiese. Between 1899 and 1945, he created a multiplicity of outstanding illustrations, thus he was considered by many to be one of the most important artists in the first half of the 19th century. Franz Stassen is one of the illustrators for the work of composer Richard Wagner. Stassen's featured illustrations are for "Tristan and Isolde", to "Parisifal" and "The Ring of the Nibelungen" set. Stassen died in 1949.
