Harry C. Smith

Harry C. Smith

1923 - 1991

Harry Smith was a man of many interests - in addition to being a painter, he was also a frame maker, an anthropologist, a translator, a linguist, a musicologist (he issued the multi-volume Anthology of American Folk Music, winner of 2 Grammys), collector and filmmaker. Grant grew up in the Pacific Northwest, and lived for a time in Northern California, embracing the bohemian community. After receiving the Solomon Guggenheim grant in 1950, he moved to New York permanently. Smith was entrenched in the art community, and was close friends with such diverse people as Allen Ginsberg, Gregory Corso, Dizzy Gillespie, Hilla Rebay and Charlie Parker.
