J. Jeffrey Grant

1883 - 1960

J. Jeffrey Grant was born in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1883. He studied art in Aberdeen and then in Munich. He moved to Toronto in 1904, then to Chicago in 1907. He initially worked as a designer and engraver until he opened his painting studio in 1920. He is best known for his paintings of small towns in Illinois, downtown scenes of Chicago, and New England fishing villages. Grant was a member of the Chicago Painters and Sculpture, the Chicago Society of Artists, the Palette and Chisel Academy in Chicago, the North Shore Art Association, the Chicago Gallery Association and the Guild of Freelance Artists. Grant exhibited his paintings at the Palette and Chisel Academy of Fine Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, the Munich Art League, the National Academy of Design, the Corcoran Gallery, the Currier Gallery, the Illinois State Fair in 1956 and the Galena Fair in 1958. Grant ws exhibited 62 paintings at the Art Institute of Chicago, and in 1935 he had a one man exhibition there. Grant's work is currently represented in the Springfield Museum of Art in Illinois, the Munich Art League, Lawrence College and Concordia College. Grant died in 1960 in Berwyn, Illinois.
