Jan Franz van Bloemen was born in Anvers in 1662. He was best known for his landscapes and wildlife scenes executed in oil, watercolor, gauche or fresco. He preferred painting Italian landscapes, particularly the cascading environment of Tivoli Bloemen studied painting, first under his father Pieter et de Norbert van Bloemen, then under d'Anton Goubau. In 1681, Bloemen went to Rome and changed his name to l'Orizzonte. His work was influenced by his friends Claude Gellée, Gaspard Dughet, LaHaye and Claude Lorrain. He was a member of the Académie de Saint-Luc. Bloemen's paintings are represented in museums in Rome, St. Petersburg, Vienna, Milan, Madrid, Glasgow, Geneva and the Louvre in Paris.
