Jim Flanagan

Jim Flanagan

Jim Flanagan was born on September 3, 1937 in Brooklyn, New York. He grew up in a tough Brooklyn neighborhood where artists were considered "sissies" so he had to keep his Saturday painting lessons at the Brooklyn Museum Art School a secret. After army service, he worked his way from apprentice to art director in various Manhattan studios and ad agencies while attending the Pratt Institute and the Art Students League nights and weekends. An offer to teach in the Department of Fine Arts at Arizona State University lured Jim and his young family out west where the open spaces and brilliant light inspired him to paint and use color more freely. Jim's main influences are the French painters of the early 20th century, especially Cezanne, Matisse, de Vlaminck, and Dufy who is considered by many to be a master colorist. His work was featured in the Biennial at the Phoenix Art Museum and hangs proudly in homes and businesses across the United States, Great Britain, South Africa, and Australia.
