John White

John White

1855 - 1931

John White was an esteemed member of the Royal Institute and exhibited there on a regular basis. His favorite subject was the simple town life of the English country- side, especially the medieval towns and cottages of Devon and Surrey. There he rendered the timeless vistas and life of these places, which were already by the late 19th century, far behind the modern cities of London, Liverpool and Manchester. This made them exotic and ideally appealing, especially to the wealthy who lived in these cities. This painting from early in his career is among his finest works. It is enhanced in a symbolist style hand carved and gilded frame appropriate for the era.
