Joseph-Morris Raphael

Joseph-Morris Raphael

1872 - 1950

This stunning study, typical of the work done by students of the French Academy, represents J.M.Raphael's early efforts in Paris. Raphael was born in Jackson, CA, and studied painting at the School of Design in San Francisco under Arthur Matthews and Douglas Tilden. In 1902 he furthered his studies in Paris at Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Academie Julian under Laurens. There he became part of an American expatriate colony of painters, and lived between Paris, Brussels and Antwerp with occasional visits back to San Francisco, until the beginning of WWII. Today, Raphael is considered one of the most notable advocates of Impressionism in California. His work can be found in many important collections including that of the San Francisco Museum of Art, the Oakland Museum, the San Diego Museum and de Young Museum at Stanford University.
