Joseph Tomanek

1889 - after 1939

Joseph Tomanek was born in Czechoslovakia, and studied art at Hynais in Prague before moving to Chicago to attend the Art Institute. He painted under A. H. Krehbiel, A. Sterba and Karl A. Buehr. He specialized in painting genre scenes, nudes and allegorical subjects. Tomanek settled in Chicago and became a part of the city's growing art community. He was a member of several important clubs, including the the Association of Chicago Painters and Sculptors, the Bohemian Art Club of Chicago, the Palette and Chisel Academy of Fine Art, and the Chicago Gallery Association. His work has been exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, and is currently represented at the Georgia Museum of Art. Tomanek's paintings have sold in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and New Orleans.
