Louis Oscar Griffith was a landscape painter and etcher. He was born in Greencastle, Indiana in 1875, although he grew up in Texas. As a young man, he attended the St. Louis School of Fine Arts, beginning in 1893, and went on to attend the Art Institute of Chicago and the National Academy of Design in Paris. He studied privately under Frank Reaugh, a well known landscape painter. In the early 1900s Griffith established a studio in Chicago and also began making excursions to Brown County, Indiana to paint. Griffith was a member of the most important artists' clubs in Chicago and Indiana such as the Chicago Society of Etchers of which he was the founder, the Chicago Gallery Association, the Chicago Painters and Sculptors, and the Palette and Chisel Club of which he was the president in 1911. He was also a member of the Brown County Art Association, the Indiana Art club, the Indiana Printmakers and the Hoosier Salon. Griffith has had his paintings and etchings exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco, the New Orleans Art Association, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art and the Hoosier Salon. He has also shown at the San Antonio Art League, the National Museum of American Art, the Library of Congress, the National Academy of Design and the Brown County Arts Club. He has also been shown at the Palette and Chisel Club, the Indiana Arts Club, the Chicago Sculptors and Engravers, the Indiana Printmakers and the John Herron Art Institute. Griffith's work is currently represented in the National Gallery of Art, the Delgado Museum of Art in New Orleans, the Oakland Art Gallery, the Indian State University collection, the Lafayette Art Association, the Vangerpoel Collection, the Witte Memorial Museum, the J. B. Speed Memorial Museum in Louisville and the Union League Club of Chicago.
