Mary Brewster Hazelton

Mary Brewster Hazelton

Mary Brewster Hazleton's portraits evoke the refined elegance and style characterized by the Boston School painters at the turn of the 20th century. Mary's work reflects the influence of Edmund Tarbell and Frank Benson, noted artists, under both of whom she studied. As Tarbell's premier pupil, Hazelton absorbed many painting techniques and conventions of the time , which also incorporated Asian aesthetics such as a flattened picture plane, large blocks of color, an earthy, tonal palette and the painterly suggestion of fabric and texture through delicate brushwork.
