Mildred Emerson Williams

1892 - 1967

Mildred Emerson was a painter and lithographer, born in 1892 in Detroit, Michigan. She studied painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Art Students League in NY. She was under the tutelage of Henry McCarter, Robert Henri, Charles Locke, John Sloan and George Luks. Williams was a member of the Detroit Society of Women Painters, the Birmingham Society of Women Painters and the Michigan Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters. She has had her paintings exhibited at the Society of Independent Artists, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Corcoran Gallery, the Carnegie Institute, and the Detroit Institute of Art. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Detroit Institute of Art and the the Children's Museum of Detroit.
