Shirley Kravitt

Shirley Kravitt

b. 1925

Throughout the 1960's & 1970's one could hardly have entered the Chicago art world without frequently encountering the persona of Shirley Kravitt. Artist, art historian, community arts organizer, Eastern European cultural liaison, volunteer, lecturer, mother and wife, Kravitt seemed to be everywhere at once. Born in Chicago in 1925, she studied at the AIC, and then the Ecole d. Beaux Arts in Paris. Her list of exhibitions and honors is impressive: she was awarded the Prix d. Paris in 1959, the Silver Medal at the Paris International Salon of 1964, the Gold Medal at the Athens International Exhibition of 1967, and First Prize at the Chicago Society of Artists in 1969. She also studied in New York with Hans Hoffman at the Art Students League, and was one of the few champions of the Abstract Expressionist style in Chicago, where she continued to be enamored with the surrealist aesthetic of the post war European Schools.
