Svend Svendsen was born in Christiania, Norway. He came to Chicago in 1893 to exhibit his paintings at the Colombian Exposition where he won the Norwegian painting gold medal. Svendsen's success at the Expo prompted him to stay in Chicago to pursue his promising art career. Svendsen painted outdoor scenes; his Norwegian background is evident through the artist's brilliant study of sunlight, particularly sunrises and sunsets.
