Tunis Ponsen

1881 - 1961

Tunis Ponsen, born in the Netherlands in 1891, immigrated to the United States in 1913 and settled in Muskegon, Michigan. While earning a living as a house painter and decorator, Ponsen enrolled in evening classes at the Hackley Art Gallery (now known as the Muskegon Museum of Art.) His first museum exhibit of two small paintings at the Hackley Gallery in 1921 was followed one year later at the same gallery by a one-person exhibition. Ponsen moved to Chicago in 1924 where he graduated from the School of the Art Institute (AIC). Ponsen's paintings and watercolors were exhibited thirty-four times from 1921-1949, at important museums and currently reside in those museum collections including the Art Institute of Chicago, Northwestern University Museum, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Flint Institute of Arts, the Muskegon Museum of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art and the Toledo Art Museum. Over Ponsen's 40 year career, his work was also included in hundreds of gallery and art association exhibitions and won many prizes and awards. He was a member of the Chicago Painters and Sculptors, Chicago Gallery Association, the Chicago Society of Artists and the Chicago Gallery Association.
