Willem van den Berg

1886 -

Born in Den Haag, Holland in 1886, Willem van den Berg followed in the footsteps of his father, artist Andries van den Berg. He studied in both Belgium and Paris, and later became a student of the Barbizon school of painting while in France. His work includes still-lifes and figurative paintings as well as portraits and landscapes but he is best known for his images of peasants, farmers and fishermen. In 1935, van den Berg exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago and in 1949 he became the director of the National Academy of Art in Amsterdam. He painted and exhibit internationally throughout his career and his paintings are housed in museum collections in Holland, Europe and the United States.
