Sam Ostrowsky Biography

casino online kostenlos 777 Sam Ostrowsky was a Russian-Jewish artist who began his art career at the Kiev Fine Art School during the Tsarist era, and later studied at the Academy Julian in Paris as a student of Jean Paul Laurens. Still a young man when he moved to Chicago, he soon became a character in the Chicago Modern art scene. Although married in 1912, he continued his artist's bohemian life-style and could be found painting, with wife and child in tow, in the leading art centers of the the United States: the Catskills, Cape Cod, Providence, Taos, and between 1919 to 1940 in Paris. During the 1930's he had a studio on the Boulevard Raspail, a street shared with other famous moderns: Picasso, Chagall, Soutine, Matisse. In Paris he exhibited at the Salon d'Automne, the Salon des Tuileries, and the Salon des Independants. In the U.S. he showed at the Chicago Society of Artists, The Pennsylvania Academy Juried Annual, Society of Independent Artists, The Art Institute of Chicago and the Whitney Bi-Annual. With the start of W.W.II, Ostrowsky was caught without ready resources and found himself fleeing from the Nazi's. It took him months to leave the continent, literally walking his way across France to Spain, and then boarding a freighter bound for the Americas. He arrived in Chicago nearly a year after the the start of the war, a "broken man", with the contents of his studio never accounted for and presumed destroyed.
