Modern Period

Time period: 1860 – 1980

Most Modern Art works were international in scope, starting with the Impressionists, through the Arts & Crafts Movement, Symbolism, Post-Impressionism, Art Nouveau, Cubism and Futurism in Europe, followed by Expressionism and Abstract Expressionism in the US and Outsider Art in the US and UK in the 1940’s. Modern art is hallmarked by art intended to move away from traditional narratives to abstraction. Art produced at the end of this period is also often called Contemporary or Post Modern.
