An American movement which began in the 1930’s in New York, Abstract Expressionism offered an avant garde approach to filling canvases with fields of color, abstract form and vigorous expression. Abstract artists were influenced bu Surrealism, and set the stage of America’s post war dominance of the art world over Europe. Motherwell and Pollock and Rothko remain among very influential abstract expressionist modern artists of mid 20th century works and beyond.
