Impressionist Style

Time period: 19th century

Started by a group of Parisian artists who exhibited their work together, this 19th century style highlighted a new approach to painting, en plein air. Though realist painters, they produced works based on “impressions” of their subject matter, and of the light upon those objects. Impressionist works are known for their expressive brush strokes, sensual use of color and luminosity. Cassat, Degas, Monet, and Renoir are among beloved Impressionists of this period.
